Naomi, the mother-in-law of Ruth, plays a significant part in this story. She returned from a stay in Moab bereft of her husband and two sons, with only a loyal daughter-in-law. Upon her return to Bethlehem, Naomi, whose name means "pleasant" or "lovely," described herself as "bitter" (Ruth 1:19-21). Although she was in difficult circumstances, Naomi encouraged Ruth in her bold dealings with Boaz.
